Codex reset guide

How to reset Codex limit

Compare waiting, banked resets, paid instant resets, credits and plan changes after a Codex limit. Choose from options actually shown in your account.

The short answer

There is no general client command that grants a new Codex allowance on demand. When a limit is reached, OpenAI directs you to the account Usage page or limit banner for the options available to that account: wait, apply an eligible banked reset, add credits, upgrade, or, for eligible personal plans, buy an instant reset. These are different mechanisms with different costs and effects; choose only after checking which allowance stopped you.

Is this your situation?

  • A Codex limit notice appears and you want to continue before its displayed reset time.
  • You see “1 reset available” and need to know whether using it changes a future weekly date.
  • You are comparing a credit balance with a paid instant reset and want to avoid buying the wrong thing.
  • You authenticate with an API key and a 429 appears; that is a separate API-rate-limit path, not a ChatGPT-plan reset.

Step by step

  1. Identify the allowance and billing path

Open Settings → Usage or the relevant Codex usage page. Check whether you are using a ChatGPT plan, an eligible credit arrangement, an Enterprise workspace budget, or your own API key. Note the exhausted window and displayed reset time. Options shown on another account or plan may not exist for yours.

  2. Use the no-purchase option first when time permits

Waiting until the account’s displayed reset time avoids spending a banked reset or buying credits. The reset timer on this site can remind you of that specific time but cannot change the allowance. If the time passes without restored access, verify the account and contact Support for investigation.

  3. Evaluate an available banked reset

If the account shows a saved reset, read its expiration and confirmation screen. OpenAI says applying a full banked reset refreshes the five-hour and weekly windows and changes the weekly reset date. It is a one-time account benefit, not API credit and not evidence that a public reset already reached you.

  4. Compare credits and an eligible instant reset

OpenAI describes credits as a separate pay-as-you-go balance for supported usage after included allowances are exhausted. Its paid instant weekly reset is available only to eligible Plus and Pro personal accounts and restores applicable allowances immediately; the next weekly period begins with the next Work or Codex request. Check current eligibility and the price displayed in your own account before purchasing.

  5. Consider a plan or workspace change only for the right reason

A limit banner may offer upgrading, but plans differ and workspace administrators may set effective budgets or user limits. Do not upgrade solely because a social post promised a reset. Read what the current offer would change and whether the exhausted constraint is controlled by your account or workspace.

  6. Keep API-key errors on a separate track

If the failing request uses an OpenAI API key, ChatGPT-plan credits and banked Codex resets do not describe that API project’s request or token rate limits. Read the API response and developer-console limits instead. A 429 can indicate a temporary rate limit or a billing cap that will not be fixed by waiting a few seconds.

Still stuck?

  • Do not delete local Codex files to “reset” a server-side allowance; that can risk chats and configuration without changing billing.
  • If you paid for a reset but usage was not restored, contact OpenAI Support while signed into the charged account.
  • If the notice offers no earlier option, the available path may simply be waiting for the account’s displayed time.

Frequently asked questions

Can codex login or a reinstall reset my usage limit?

No documented Codex login or reinstall step grants an account allowance. Check the account limit notice for the options actually available rather than altering local files.

Is buying credits the same as buying an instant weekly reset?

No. OpenAI describes credits as pay-as-you-go supported usage; an eligible instant reset restores the applicable windows and changes the weekly schedule after your next Work or Codex request.

Can OpenAI Support give me a manual courtesy reset?

OpenAI says Support does not reset ChatGPT or Codex usage limits on request. It can investigate incorrect counting, a missing eligible reset, or access not returning after the stated time.
