Banked reset vs automatic reset: they are not the same thing

Automatic resets are applied directly to the covered limits and are not stored. Banked resets stay available in your account until you apply them yourself. Granting a reset is not the same as your access having been restored.

Start here

Decide whether the reset you are waiting for is automatic or stored in your account.

The distinction in one line

  • Automatic reset — applied to the limits it covers. You do nothing. It is not stored, and usage afterwards counts against the refreshed allowance.
  • Banked reset — stored in your account until you apply it. Until you do, it changes nothing about your access.

Getting these backwards causes two opposite mistakes: waiting for a reset that already happened, or believing a stored reset has already restored your access when it has not.

Where banked resets come from

The documented source is promotions: for some Plus and Pro promotions, a successful referral can add a banked reset. That is a specific, conditional mechanism — not a general “you get a reset when you complain” arrangement.

Separately, OpenAI may occasionally provide eligible users with a one-time reset. Eligibility, which limits are affected, and any redemption or expiration requirements vary by offer, and future resets are not guaranteed.

How to apply one

The documented route is the usage summary:

  1. Open the profile menu.
  2. Select the usage summary showing the available reset count, for example 1 reset available.
  3. Apply the reset from there.

After a full banked reset is applied, the official guidance is that both the 5-hour and weekly windows refresh and the weekly reset date changes. Check the usage screen afterwards for the new reset time.

What a reset count does not mean

This is the part people get wrong, so it is worth stating plainly.

A count of available resets is not evidence that the site has detected your account recovering. It is a stored resource that has not been used. If you see a number and your access has not returned, the number is not broken — you have not applied it.

A public announcement of a reset is not proof that your account was included. Scope and eligibility decide that.

The part that surprises people

The official guidance states that no additional reset, credit, refund or other compensation is provided solely because you:

  • were not eligible for a one-time reset,
  • did not notice a reset that was correctly applied,
  • or did not use a banked reset before its stated expiration.

So: if you are offered a banked reset, check its expiry and use it deliberately. Waiting it out does not earn you a replacement.

Quick checks when you are unsure which situation you are in

  1. Can you see a count of resets in your account? If yes, you have a stored resource. Applying it is your action, not an automatic event.
  2. Has your access already come back? Then an automatic reset likely covered you. Nothing needs to be applied.
  3. Did your weekly reset date move on its own? Then a window was refreshed. Note the new date.
  4. Is the reset time in the past with no access? That is neither of the above. It is the case the official guidance points at support for.

Known limits of this guidance

  • Evidence level: documentary, from the official help article as read on the review date.
  • Referral promotions, eligibility and expiry windows are campaign-specific and change. Nothing here states how many resets any particular offer grants.
  • The article describes the mechanisms but not every account’s menu layout, which varies by platform and client version.

That an automatic reset is applied directly to the usage limits covered by the announcement and is not saved for later, with usage afterwards counting toward the refreshed allowance; that for some Plus and Pro promotions a successful referral can add a banked reset; that the usage summary reachable from the profile menu shows the available reset count such as '1 reset available'; that using a full banked reset refreshes the 5-hour and weekly windows and changes the weekly reset date; that OpenAI may occasionally provide eligible users with a one-time reset and future resets are not guaranteed; and that no additional reset, credit or refund is provided solely because a user was not eligible for a one-time reset, did not notice a correctly applied reset, or did not use a banked reset before it expired.

Reviewer note

Directly from the official help article, including its explicit statement that no compensation is given for a missed or unused reset. This is the point most often misread, so it is quoted rather than paraphrased.
